Dr Butler graduated from the University of Queensland with First Class Honours in Medicine. He completed his specialist dermatology training in Queensland at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Princess Alexandra Hospital, as well as in the United Kingdom.
On attaining Fellowship of the Australasian College of Dermatologists, Dr Butler was awarded the Travelling Fellowship for overall achievement and was co-recipient of the Founders’ Medal for Procedural Dermatology.
Dr Butler undertook postgraduate research in skin cancer and was awarded a Master of Philosophy in Medical Science. He has published in international peer-reviewed journals and presented at dermatology meetings in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Dr Butler is a visiting dermatologist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where he supervises a general dermatology clinic and contributes to the care of hospital inpatients. He is also a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Queensland and is actively involved in the education and specialist training of dermatologists.
Dr Butler has served as an editor of the internationally recognised Australasian Journal of Dermatology. He has previously chaired the Queensland Faculty of the Australasian College of Dermatologists and convened the College’s Annual Scientific Meeting.
Dr Butler currently serves on the National Examinations Committee of the Australasian College of Dermatologists as one of two Queensland examiners. In 2026, the College awarded him its Certificate of Meritorious Service in recognition of his contribution to the profession.
Dr Butler has broad interests across medical and surgical dermatology, including acne and the diagnosis and management of skin cancer.
